Abstract des Autors

The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) was one of the most extraordinary political and social upheavals of this century. It attempted to re-establish an ideological purity of Communism threatened by the revisionists and capitalists over the previous 17 years and to recreate pure Mao Zedong Thought. This article examines, for the first time, the Cultural Revolution and sport in China in its social, cultural and political contexts. It discusses the relationship between the Revolution and sport; the development of the Chinese Communist sports ideology and practise, and the stimulation of women's sport. It concludes that the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution played a significant role in shaping Communist sport in modern China. Verf.-Referat
