Abstract des Autors

Endurance physical exercise frequently leads to latent or manifest iron deficiency especially in the case of long-distance runners. In the present study the influence of a single test marathon on red blood cells, transferrin, and ferritin was observed over a considerable time in the recovery period after the run. Blood samples were drawn in 15 trained male subjects before, immediately after, as well as 1 hr, and 22 hrs following the run. Elements of red cells reflected the changes of plasma volume. Immediately after the run red blood cell elements were increased due to hemoconcentration whereas 22 hrs later the values were decreased due to hemodilution. Transferrin and ferritin levels were increased more than could be explained by hemoconcentration. From these results it may be concluded that ferritin is released out of the body cells, probably in a similar way as in inflammation. Verf.-Referat
