Abstract

High performance in archery is related to the ability to shoot an arrow at a given target with high accuracy. Important phases of the shooting movement are the stance, the drawing, the aiming and the release. During the aiming phase, the movements of the bow have a reasonable impact on the shooting score. It has been shown previously, that smaller fluctuations of the aim point on the target in the last second before the release of the shot may be positively related to a high score. Therefore, various methods are used to measure the archers aiming trajectories while shooting in the training situation. However, to date, no data could be obtained during a competition. For this purpose, a video based system is used to measure the aiming trajectories of the sight in recurve archers during the German National Championships 2007.The video based system, developed for biathlon shooting, was modified in order to track the two-dimensional movement of the sight in the frontal plane while the archer aims.
