Abstract

The so-called 'carving ski,' which has a short side curve radius, is now widely spreading in use not only among ski racers but also among popular alpine skiers. It is generally accepted that effective turns without side skidding can be obtained by using the carving ski. It is usually indicated that the turning motion using the carving ski is different from that with the conventional ski in which the radius of the side curve is long. It is important to know what elements compose the turning motion with the carving ski and what role each factor plays. However, there has been no direct measurement of joint angle motions in the turn of the carving ski. The authors have developed joint angle sensor equipment for joint angle motions and a force sensor for the reaction forces from the snow surface. In this study, joint angle motions are measured using the equipment attached on the skier's leg in the turn using a carving ski. The result is compared with that of a conventional turn of a normal ski to elucidate the main factors in the turning motion of the carving ski and to identify differences from the conventional turning motion. The differences in the turning motions are investigated in relation to the side curve of the ski. Einleitung
