Abstract
Fatigue-type stress fractures of the sacrum are uncommon, representing <2% of injuries in a series of 320 athletes with stress fractures. We recently evaluated three female collegiate long-distance runners who had unilateral sacroiliac joint pain. Each athlete proved to have a fatigue-type stress fracture of the sacrum. In summary, a knowledge of the entity and a high index of suspicion are required for prompt diagnosis and appropriate management. Based on our experience, MRI may have an important role to play both in the initial diagnosis and in follow-up. Verf.- Referat
