abstract	Verf. beschreibt die geschichtliche Entwicklung des organisierten Sport in Amerika, in Bezug auf das "Thanksgiving-Fest". Er erklaert, wie und warum das Footballspiel am "Thanksgiving-day" als die populaerste Sportveranstaltung und Unterhaltung Amerikas anaerkannt wurde. Waehrend es frueher ein religioeses Fest war hat es sich spaeter in einen nationalen Feiertag verwandelt, sodass jederman dem Footballspiel zuschauen konnte. Der organisierte Sport sollte verschiedene soziale Klassen, ethnische und einheimische Gruppen vereinigen. Einige bekannte Mitglieder der Gesellschaft (Nathaaniel S. Shaler, Walter Camp, Reverend A.E. Colton) behaupten, dass das Footballspiel die Maenner physisch und moralisch entwickelt hat. Verf. beschreibt welche Funktion das Footballspiel im Zusammenhang mit der buergerlichen Religion auf die Auspraegung des Nationalismus hatte. Eaton
