Abstract des Autors

It is well-known that the famous French linguist Michel Bréal (1832–1915) donated a silver cup for the winner of the Marathon race of the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens 1896. It was Spyridon Louis who got the prize during the victory ceremony. Bréal being unable to go to Athens during the Games sent the cup via executive case to the director of the École française d’Athènes Théophile Homolle, informing him by letter of March 20th 1896 that he should give it to Dimitrios Vikelas, first president of the International Olympic Committee. As a friend of Pierre de Coubertin, Bréal had proposed by letter of February 19th 1895 to celebrate the fiftieth foundation-festival of the École française d’Athènes at the same time of the Olympic Games, but Homolle did not meet the demand.
