Abstract

By using scientific literature and comparative analysis methods, the article aims to discuss the change of victory significance. The article analyzes the impact of globalizing liquid tendencies on sport; discusses the interpretation of changing meaning of victory significance; shows what consequences for sport might have the growing importance of victory significance. To achieve the aim of the article following tasks were raised: 1) to discuss the meaning of victory in sport; 2) to analyze the change of victory significance. Global trends of consumerism leads to a rapid change which is also seen in the sport world. In the context of liquid society, with the weakening social relations, with devaluation of values and decreasing their functionality, the meaning of some values seems hardly understandable. The significance of victory is also changing and in many cases the new version, based on consumerism logic, seems quite grotesquely. Victory has become a lofty purpose, for the sake of which all performance measures are justified. Ability to achieve the victory helps to get rid of traditional way of its achievement. This opens possibility to use a wide range (sometimes even dishonourable) spectrum of behaviour. Regardless of how victory was earned, the glory of success which comes as a result of victory, “washes out” personal honour and the behaviour of athlete remains unquestioned. This is how the circle, which strengthens and legitimizes positions of new meaning of victory, is being formed. Victory as well as competition and rivalry are inevitably and necessary attributes of sport performance. However, not all the ways of its achievement are acceptable. The growing importance of victory, its becoming the main goal of whole sporting process, reduces the importance of its achievement way. The pursuit of victory at any price encourages more aggressive, intensive and crude struggle, which raises the growing possibility of aggression or even violence in sport. Verf.-Referat
