Abstract

The purpose of this study is to detect the optimal timing of take-off action in ski jumping. Assuming a jumper could always produce the same motions, the timing of jump action would be the most important variable for the flight distance. It is crucial for this kind of experiment to keep all but one variable or condition the same. In this experiment, the timing of jump action will be the one variable. In this study, the take-off action was performed by a compact doll-model instead of a human. The flight distance solely depends on the timing of initiating the jump action. When the doll-model jumps on the model jump hill, which is 1/100 of a large hill, the aerodynamic force can be ignored. Because the same motion can be reproduced over and over again by using the doll-model, the effect of the timing can be measured. It is possible to clarify the relationship between the timing and the flight distance because different timings of initiating the motion can be measured by changing the release points.
