Abstract

This pilot study claims to elaborate on the different kind of steps and shifts performed by table tennis players. The most important technical aspect, even though often underrated by the surveys about this sport, is the performance of the steps and of the shifts acted by the player to reach the right position in order to make the best stroke. This survey has the goal to define a standard steps classification as well as to suggest a method of research on the subject in order to figure out what are the most employed steps at different levels. The process of technical improvement is based on an optimum technical model of a very high level. Studying and deepen that aspect means analyzing and comparing the steps performed by international and national players and elaborate them using the mentioned standard classification.
