Abstract

The Paralympics have reached great importance in economic and societal terms, as could be observed at the World Games of disabled sport. The significance or otherwise of the Paralympics as a sporting highlight in the mass media has until now not been well examined. This contribution aims to trace the development of the Paralympics and the representation of this event in the mass media. The mass media coverage of the Games in Sydney 2000 and Salt Lake City 2002 as well as in Athens 2004 are considered in detail as is the understanding of journalists of the Paralympics as event in the mass media.
