The objective of this volume is to bring together international scholars to provide an overview of empirical, theoretical, and applied perspectives on sports career transitions. There are 13 chapters organized into three sections: Part I: Theory and Research on Career Transitions in Sport, Part II: Career Transition Interventions, and Part III: Special Populations. A total of 29 authors from six countries, who work in arenas that either relate directly to, or interface strongly with, career transitions, have contributed chapters that focus on the diverse research in the area. The book is geared toward scholars and students in sport psychology and related areas interested in career transitions and retirement from sport. It has been written to complement the growing literature on counseling athletes (e.g., Etzel, Ferrante, & Pinkney, 1996) and thus is also directed toward psychologists, career counselors, and other practitioners working (or interested in working) with athletes in transition. Finally, because career transitions are among the most significant experiences in sport (Murphy 1995), the book has been written to provide coaches, directors of sport federations and national Olympic committees, and others responsible for the well-being of athletes, with an overview of the topic. The topics are: Part I: 1. Lavallee, David: Theoretical perspectives on career transitions in sport; 2. Brewer, Britton W.;Van Raalte, Judy L.;Petipas, Albert J.: Self-identity issues in sport career transitions; 3. Alfermann, Dorothee: Causes and consequences of sport career termination. Part II: 4.
