Abstract

The rotational (or spin) technique of the shot put attracted serious attention for the first time when Aleksandr Baryshnikov of the Soviet Union used it in the international match between the U.S.S.R and West Germany in Augsburg in 1972. Baryshnikov's winning performance at this meeting was 20.54m, which he later increased to a world record of 22.00m. In the 1976 Olympic Games the rotational technique helped him to a bronze medal (21.00m). However, the rotational technique is actually not as new as many are inclined to believe. Already at the beginning of the sixties the Czech shot putter Malek, who was coached by Kerssenbrock, tried putting the shot using a rotation instead of the linear approach. Baryhnikov's coach, Viktor Alekseyev, had experimented with the rotational technique even as early as in the fifties. This bibliography of literature dealing with the rotational shot put includes altogether 113 documents from the database SPOLIT of the Federal Institute for Sport Science, the database of the Sport Research and Information Centre (SIRC) in Ottawa/Canada, and from private sources. In this literature search no restrictions have been made with regard to publication year or language. Thus the bibliography is assumed to be fairly complete. Verf.-Referat (gekuerzt)
