abstract The main purpose of this study was to answer the question why volleyball referees stop officiating. The sample consisted of 420 volunteer volleyball referees officiating at either (inter)national or local level. The assumed predictors of the intent to quit reflect the aspects of commitment that can be found in literature: attraction, perceived lack of alternatives, personal investments, and feelings of obligation to remain. The results indicate that the predictor variables and intent to quit are not only conceptually, but also empirically separable. Moreover, intent to quit appeared to be the single direct predictor of actual turnover. Of the variance of intent to quit 52% could be explained by the predictor variables. Lack of positive affective responses to officiating and attraction of alternatives seem to be the main reasons why volleyball referees stop officiating. Furthermore it is concluded that the proposed model satisfies standards of unequivocal conceptualization, empirical distinctiveness, and predicitive validity. Implications for both research and practice are discussed. Verf.-Referat
