Abstract

Although female involvement in sport has increased considerably, there is widespread consciousness that women's sport is placed second to men's. Sciences related to sport have contributed to shape this impressions. Firstly, the methodology of comparing biological factors in both measurements of perfomance and capacity is practised in a way that bears witness to male domination in physical activities. Quantitative results prove differences, and those differences are given the social meaning to reconfirm ontological and evaluative statements referring to gender. Secondly, social and psychic variables, if ever taken into account, are rarely integrated into the biological line of reasoning. Special mention is made of sex-specific role socialization and how it is instrumental to physical capacity gaps between girls and boys at times when biological tests reveal different achievement levels. Interpretation neglects the broad range of overlapping performance results of the sexes. Interdisciplinary research is stimulated by giving new directions. Verf.-Referat
