Abstract des Autors

28 highly trained female triathletes, including the European champion of 1989, (21-57 years, median 29 years, nutrition low in or without meat predominantly low ferritin concentrations (5-72 micro-g/l, median 22 micro-g/l)), during a triathlon competition (2.5 km swimming, 93 km cycling, 22 km running), lasting between 4 h 30 min and 6 h 50 min, in spite of the intake of nutrition and fluids, showed a remarkable loss of body weight (0.6-3.7 kg, median 1.7 kg) as well as remarkable changes of homeostasis in intravenous blood samples taken immediately after the finish compared with the pre-start status (the concentration of leukocytes increased to threefold, highest value was 35 G/l, concentration of creatine kinase increased to approximately fourfold, the concentration of thrombocytes, creatinine, and urea increased by 32%, 27%, and 48%, respectively), while detectable signs of hemoconcentration (relative increase of hemoglobin concentration 1.4% and of hematocrit 0.6%) were clearly less than during shorter workloads.
