Abstract des Autors

Twelve Greco-Roman and 15 freestyle wrestlers took part in the study. Detailed history, measurement of body weight, body height, body fat% and analysis for blood gases and urine specimens were performed immediately before (I) and 16-20 hours after (II) weigh-in. The studied 9 weight-classes were distributed into 3 groups. As compared to the former weight, the average of "making weight" time took 3.0+/-1.33 days. During that time the mean weight loss was 3.46+/-1.33 kg (4.73+/-1.85%) what equals to 1.15+/-1.14 kg weight reduction per day. The weight gain after 14-20 hours following weight-in was 1.9+/-1.3 kg (2.7+/-2.80 %) in the average. Every wrestler had proteinuria, haematuria and acetonuria at the first and second examination. There was no significant difference in body fat% between the measurements. Blood gas analysis revealed a moderate increase in pH (0.035+/-0.043) and a moderate decrease in pCO2 (1.67+/-1.21) values when compared to the data of the first examination. Base excess values did not change. Among the studied weight-classes significant differences were found in several parameters. Summarizing the results the present practice of weight loss in Hungarian elite wrestlers is considered unacceptable from medical point of view. Compared to international data and recommandations the rate and degree of weight loss in wrestlers far exceed the proper degree, consequently the weight gain by rehydration is significant as well.
