Abstract des Autors
We studied 9 competitive cyclists and triathletes in a double-blind cross-over design (L-carnitin, n=4; placebo, n=5). Method: All subjects underwent an incremental test to determine VO2max. After 3 days without training accompanied by a protocolled diet rich in carbohydrates they performed an endurance exercise at 75% VO2max and began with oral L-carnitin supplementation (2g/day) for 5 weeks. After this period the athletes repeated the tests in the same form. Results: No effects were found on maximum power and VO2max after L-carnitin supplementation (5.2 watt/kg + 0.2 vs. 5.0 watt/kg + 0.2; 68.9 ml/kg x min + 6.9 vs. 65 ml/kg x min + 5.8). As well <Lac> remained unchanged during incremental and endurance test and there was no increase of endurance time (61.4 min + 5.37 vs. 51.9 min + 12.52). Conclusion: Oral L-carnitin supplementation has no metabolic effect. Verf.-Referat
