Abstract des Autors
This double blind study examined the influence of oral administration of 4 g/d L-carnitine on the development of aerobic performance over a four week period of controlled endurance training. 23 male volunteers underwent an incremental exercise test and a 90 min endurance test (62.3 +/- 5.8% VO2max) before and after the training and medication period. After training the verum group showed significantly higher values for relative VO2max, maximal O2-pulse and test duration. Both groups showed significant decreases in heart rate, concentrations of blood lactate and of serum FFA and glycerol without any differences between verum and placebo during the endurance test. The results suggest that the administration of L-carnitine tends to improve performance at higher workload intensities, but does not increase lipometabolic efficiency during 90 min submaximal aerobic exercise.
