Author's abstract

A large number of tests indicate a correlation between the bone mass and structure and the transmission speed of ultrasound (SOS). In this study 195 female and 147 male athletes were measured before a marathon with a broadband ultrasonic device (Achilles, Fa. Lunar/MEI Wiesbaden, frequency 0.5 MHz) at the calcaneus evaluating the SOS, BUA und S parameters. As for the female runners aged between 23 und 69 there was a significant correlation (p<0.001) of SOS and S to age, while BUA was only reduced in the >60 age group. There is a significant correlation (p<0.01) between the individual BMD (in g/cm**2) and the SOS and S (in US). Verf.-Referat
