Abstract

The goal of the Directory of Sport Research Institutes is to serve as an everyday handbook of information about the field of sport science. It includes data about both the institutions themselves and their staff. This directory is intended to be an easy-to-use reference source; the following explanation of its organization should be helpful in this regard. In the Main Section are listed 266 institutions who completed the questionnaire Altogether 2269 staffmembers are listed. Four indexes are intended to help the reader to make optimal use of the information provided in the main section. The alphabetical index serves as the basisof the indexes of theoretical areas, activity areas and international organization. In the Index of International Organizations only those organizations are included which were mentioned by at least two persons, regardless of whether these organizations are of an obvious sport-scientific character or not. In the appendix the reader will find further material needed for the understanding of the data presented in the main section. This material includes: 1. an alphabetical list of all the countries which receibed the questionnaire, 2. a key to the abbreviations of the theoretical and activity areas, 3. the letters and the worksheets sent to the co-ordinators of this project and the heads of the institutes and - last but not least - the questionnaires themselves.
