An analysis of the current database recreation preference and participation patterns (including sport and tourism) which is broad in scope, can identify lacunae in this field of knowledge and assist in determining future research directions. With this as point of departure, a comprehensive literature study was undertaken. Over 200 sources pertaining to recreational preference and participation patterns in South Africa were consulted. A review of these references reveals, among other observations, that much uncertainty exists in the literature. The majority of the investigations display a lack of depth and are freuquently restricted to being detached and localised as it lacks wider perspective which can be made representative of the bigger community. In the final analysis, some specific directives are given to planners and decision-makers. Firm motivation is provided for devising a broad reserach framework for this entire field of research endeavoure, including sport, recreation and tourism. All research projects, however small, can be accommodated within this framework and be incorporated in the existing database. Verf.-Referat
