Abstract
Inadvertent retention of a surgical sponge may occur any time there is a bloody surgical field. There are no descriptions of this surgical complication in the orthopedic literature. Two cases of sponges left in appendicular locations after orthopedic procedures are presented to stimulate thinking about a surgical complication that occurs more commonly than is suggested by the literature.
