Abstract

There are two major academic societies for the history of sport and physical education in Japan: the Historical Research Section of the Japanese Society of Physical Education (JSPE) and the Japanese Society of Sport History (JSSH). Besides these specialist organizations, there are other academic societies in which historical studies of sport can be pursued. Members of the Sociological Research Section and the Philosophical Research Section of the JSPE have studied sport and physical education from socio-historical or philosophical viewpoints which sometimes embrace historical studies. The Japanese Society of Budo founded in 1968 has also undertaken historical studies especially concerning Japanese traditional martial arts. The Research Section for the Anthropology of Sport in the JSPE, founded in 1988, has also devoted efforts to the historical studies of sport. In this brief report I would like to outline the research activities of the most influential specialist organizations: the Historical Research Section of the JSPE and of the Japanese Society of Sport History.
