To highlight the importance, relevance and power of the amateur-professional dichotomy in Australian sport, the career of one of this nations famous athletes, Harold Hardwick, who participated in both categories of sport, was examined. Hardwicks sporting record is quite remarkable, and an analysis of his career can provide increased understanding about the nature of sport in Australian society during the early years of this century.
