Abstract

Type 1 diabetics always balance between hyper- and hypoglycemia. However, exercise accelerates the rate at which both of these unpleasant alternatives develop. As exercise renders the regulation of diabetes difficult, it cannot be recommended as a means to lower glucose levels in therapy. If type 1 diabetics want to enjoy the mental and social benefits of exercise, education and home monitoring of blood glucose concentrations may allow them to change amount and timing of insulin and food intake appropriately. In type 2 diabetics the metabolic risks with exercise are less. However, both groups have to have regular medical examinations to detect long-term complications which, as poor metabolic control, may necessitate adjustment of training regimen. Verf.-Referat
