Abstract

Any of the five phases of throwing may generate injuries, but in each the kind, degree and frequency of injury differ. Few injuries occur in the initial, stance/windup phase, but in the second, cocking phase athletes are prone to muscular microtears and the dead arm syndrome. The rotator cuff is commonly injured during the third, acceleration phase of throwing, and deceleration, the fourth and most violent phase, gives rise to labral tears and posterior shoulder instability. Follow-through, the fifth phase, is the setting for inflammatory changes and spur formation. The authors discuss current treatment techniques and an injury prevention program. Verf.-Referat
