Abstract

We analyzed serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations after an ultramarathon road race in nine trained men with correction of postrace concentrations for plasma volume changes. Low-density lipoprotein increased 11.5 and very-low-density lipoprotein and triglyceride decreased 45.1 and 40.0 respectively. Inverse relationships were observed between the pre- to postrace changes in high-density lipoprotein and very-low-density lipoprotein (r=-.69) and high-density lipoprotein and triglyceride (r=-.63). Total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein increased slightly but insignificantly. These findings demonstrate that prolonged physical activity elicits an acute change in serum lipid and lipoproteins and substantiate that the observed changes are not due to plasma volume shifts. Therefore, it may be prudent to control prior physical activity when evaluating serum lipid and lipoprotein profiles. The inverse relationship between high-density lipoprotein and either very-low-density lipoprotein or triglyceride suggests a link between their respective metabolisms. Verf.-Referat
