Abstract
The authors have prepared an excellent review of EIA. The proposed mechanisms are presented and critically reviewed. The most popular hypotheses are discussed at length. Treatment options for patients with EIA are reviewed, with a discussion of various medications and the results of their therapeutic trials. The authors also present prevention of EIA without medication. The diagnosis of EIA is also briefly discussed. Important points that should be noted in this chapter include (1) pathophysiology of EIA; (2) therapeutic options, both medicinal and nonmedicinal and abortive and preventive, for the management of EIA; and (3) circumstances that increase the reactivity of airways.
