Abstract

The purpose of this study was to collect and accumulate data for knee extensors and flexors in untrained women 25 years of age and older for the development of normative trends. There were 103 subjects assessed for percent body fat and peak torque values (PTV) of the preferred leg for extension (EX) and flexion (FL) on a Cybex II isokinetic dynamometer at 60 degree/sec and 180 degrees/sec. Results indicated a mean age of 36 years of age, 61 Kg weight and 21.8 body fat. PTV for EX and FL at 60 degrees/sec were 137 and 75 Newton-meters, respectively, representing a ratio of 54.7. At 180 degress/sec, PTV for EX and FL were 88 and 57 Newton-Meters, respectively, for a 66.3 ratio. With high correlations between the two speeds, testing could be done at the speed more appropriate for the performance activity. Normative trends are presented and it is recommended that the 70th percentile should be considered minimum levels of strength for safety in participation and/or training. These may also serve as rehabilitative guidelines until more extensive data are collected. Verf.-Referat
