Abstract

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the contribution of various factors to the Margaria-Kalamen anaerobic power test and to develop norms for the test. Male (n = 300) and female (n = 300) subjects were randomly selected from a university required fitness class over a six-year period. The test was performed on a standard staircase with a vertical rise of 1.02 m and an angle of 30.5 degrees. Males were significantly different from females on the majority of anthropometric, strength, and anaerobic power parameters. Lean body mass had the highest correlations with anaerobic power in both males (r = 0.78) and females (r = 0.85). Isometric leg strength was significantly correlated (p = 0.01) with anaerobic power in males (r = 0.43) and females (r = 0.42). Males were not significantly different from females in anaerobic power when the differences in percent fat, LBM, and muscular strength were controlled by analysis of covariance. The anaerobic power norms developed for each sex were substantially different from those given in the literature. Verf.-Referat
