Abstract

This study determined the effect of three differing durations of exercise at a constant relative intensity (Part A), and two differing intensities with total work equated (Part B), on oxygen consumption during exercise and post exercise. A sedentary purpose determined whether the post exercise oxygen consumption was related to elevated body temperature. In Part A two male and three female volunteer subjects cycled at 70 V02max for 30, 45 and 60 minutes. Exercise oxygen consumption incraesed 1.5 times when work duration was extended from 30 to 45 minutes and increased 2.0 times when the exercise was doubled to 60 minutes. The post exercise oxygen consumption increased 2.4 and 5.3 times when exercise duration was increased from 30 to 45 minutes and from 30 to 60 minutes respectively. Tympanic temperatures had fallen to resting levels within approximately two hours post exercise whereas the recovery time of oxygen consumption following exercise at 30, 45 and 60 minutes was 128 +/- 4.4 min, 204 +/- 15.9 min. and 455 +/- 30.0 min respectively. Six male volunteer subjects cycled at an intensity of 70 V02max for 30 minutes and at 50 V02max until the total work was the same as that performed at 70 V02max. No significant differences was observed in exercise oxygen consumption between the 50 and 70 V02max effort. During the post exercise phase, the oxygen consumption at 50 V02max was 1.6 times greater than after exercise at 70 V02max. Verf.-Referat
