Abstract

The sunburn or solar dermatitis is one of the commonest dermatological lesions encountered during a mountaineering expedition. The present study includes observations of the various grades of sunburn in 67 students mountaineers of Banaras Hindu University during 3 successive University expeditions organized in the Lahaul Spithi District of the Himanchal Pradesh in the years 1972, 1973 and 1974 respectively. The maximum height attained during those expeditions was 23.100 feet. The male:female ratio of the team was 57 (84.5) to 10 (15.5). Twenty four (35.8) students developed the sunburn of various grades during expeditions and majority of them had visible dermatological changes at or above the height of 18,000 feet. Verf.-Referat
