Abstract

The influence of breathing high concentrations of oxygen upon physical working capacity (PWC 170) was evaluated in 13 clinically healthy male physical education students (aged 19-22 years). Five measurements of PWC 170 were made when breathing each of five different concentrations of oxygen; air (control), 40, 60, 80 and 100 O2. The average values of PWC 170 with oxygen administration were greater than when breathing only air. The greatest average values of PWC 170 were recorded when breathing 80 concentrations of oxygen. However, there was no significant difference in average PWC 170 values between breathing 80 concentrations of oxygen and breathing other 02-enriched gases. These results show that (1) the O2 inhalation improved the performance of physical working capacity (PWC 170), and (2) the highest benefit of PWC 170 was obtained when breathing 80 concentrations of oxygen.
