N2 - The value of continuous ECG monitoring in arrhythmias detection is well established. Relatively few studies have been carried out in normal subjects and even less in athletes. At the present time there is no information on the incidence of arrhythmias in well trained athletes, by which to establish if the observed arrhythmia in the athlete is within normal limits or represents an expression of occult cardiac disease. Our study, performed in 30 asymptomatic athletes of different sport activities, indicate that marked sinus bradycardia, sinus arrhythmia with sinus pauses of more than 2 seconds, and first degree A-V block are findings that can be found in young athletes. Escape junctional beats may occur with any of these bradyarrhythmias. On the contrary, in our study no subject with frequent, multiform and repetitive ventricular premature beats was found. The authors conclude that ambulatory monitoring, particularly performed during specific sports activity, is the most sensitive method of detection and evaluation of arrhythmias in athletes.
