N2 - Progressive strength training of combined concentric contractions was perfor- med three times a week for 16 weeks by 14 males (20-30 a of age) accustomed to weight training. The training period was followed by 8 weeks of detraining. The training program consisted mainly of dynamic exercise for the leg extensors with loads of 80 to 120 of one maximum repetition. The training caused significant improvements in maximal force and various force-time para- meters. During the last training month the increase in force was greatly limited, and there was a decrease in the force-time parameters. The marked improvements in muscle strength were accompanied by considerable internal adaptations in the trained muscle, as judged from increases in the fiber areasof the fast twitch (FT) and slow twitch (ST) fibers. All the adaptations indicating muscle hypertrophy occurred primarily during the last two training months. Decreases in maximal force during the detraining were accompanied by asignificant reduction in the fiber areas of the FT and ST types and by a change in body anthropometry. A periodic and partial usage of eccentric contractions, together with concentric training, is suggested to be effective in training for maximal force and also for force-time characteristics.
