Abstract

Designed for use as a basic text in courses on the physiology of exercise, this book incorporates recent advances in biological research into the study of exercise. The book is unique in its treatment of the following topics; (1) general morphological, biomechanical, and physiological cellular responses to acute and chronic exercise, (2) mechanisms of metabolic control, (3) movement control treated as the functional motor unit, (4) detailed coverage of hormo- nal, renal, and digestive factors in exercise, (5) exercise effects on tissue growth, (6) nutrition in relation to exercise, (7) drugs and performance, (8) exercise and sex differences, and (9) coaching techniques. The book is organi-zed into five units. The first and second units describe concepts basic to our understanding of exercise science, the third unit covers the means throughwhich exercise is initiated and controlled, the fourth unit describes physio- logical systems which support all movement, and the fifth unit applies con- cepts of activity to topics of everyday concern.
