Abstract
The advantages and limitations of radioimmunoassay techniques are determined by the cross-reactivity of the antisera used. Sensitivity gains a great deal by using less specific antisera thus measuring a higher portion of the metabolites of a certain substance to detect but at the same time the reliability ofthe data suffers from the presence of substances with undesired cross-reactivity. The optimal situation would be of course, if the compound in question and its metabolites reacted equally while other substances remained entirely inert. In the reality, however, for example with methandrostenolone antiserum, main metabolites of methandrostenolone cross-react equally to and less than testosterone does. The best compromise can be found in the measurement of thesamples witha combination of different RIAs and the appropriate evaluation of the complex result thus paying for higher sensitivity with more labour instead of the loss in reliability. Theoretically, the identification of the reacting compound(s) can thus become also possible. Verf.-Referat
