Abstract

The relationship between surface EMG and isometric tetanic force of M. gastrocnemius of the rat has been studied. Considering the mode of stimulation, the curvilinear relation can be explained, not by temporal recruitment mechanisms, but by spatial recruitment. The fast motor units are recruited when the stimulation level increases. It seems that the slowest motor units are recruited first and then the fastest one, for the highest levels of force. This last point is verified by means of a study of latencies between stimulations and action potentials recruited during the jerk.
