Abstract des Autors

This article reviews the history of competitive springboard and platform diving, the basic rules of competition, and the origins and pathomechanics of diving injuries with reference to the specific parts of the dive. Common diving injuries are reviewed by anatomical location with reference to the mechanisms of injury. The most frequently injured areas are the wrist, shoulder, and lumbar spine; and a higher incidence of injury occurs in platform divers than in springboard divers. It is crucial that medical professionals understand the physical demands of the sport and the pathogenesis of injury, to effect successful treatment, and to determine safe return to participation after injury.
