Abstract des Autors
Aging of human beings is characterized by a decrease of muscle strength. The decline of this physiological parameter is in part age-associated and in part the result of decreased levels of physical activity leading to a decrease of human functional capacity. For this reason many people are not able to maintain functional independence while aging and therefore will need additional domestic help. This literature survey shows that elderly (65-plus) people are capable of delaying age-associated decrease of muscle strength by following an exercise program, provided that the exercise program complies with quality guidelines. In this study recommendations are given with regard to the content of an effective exercise program in order to increase the muscle strength of elderly people. These recommendations are based on various study results and an existing guideline (ACSM, 1995). Verf.-Referat
