Physical performance is accompanied by an increase in body temperature which is relatively independent of environmental temperature within a certain range. This increase is to be thought of as a load error in a proportional control system, not as set point displacement believed to optimize exercise performance. During heat acclimation thermoregulatory threshold temperatures are decreased resulting in a slightly decreased resting temperature and a considerably retarded temperature increase at exercise, i.e. reduced load error. In several experimental series a beneficial effect could be demonstrated on endurance performance of a slight reduction of body temperature by a precooling maneuver: In a 1-h bicycle exercise test with a prescribed heart rate of 120 bpm as well as in a 1-h maximum performance test work rate was significantly increased: endurance time at 80-90% VO2max was significantly increased and VO2peak was not reduced. The beneficial effects of a lower body temperature appear to be based on a combined effect of thermoregulatory, cardiovascular and muscular factors. Verf.-Referat
