This chapter focuses on more recent and innovative developments in exercise consultants' efforts to assist individuals in reducing a sedentary lifestyle and becoming (and continuing to be) more physically active. It includes a brief overview of the primary theories relevant to exercise initiation and/or adherence, with an emphasis on newer developments. Next, the chapter reviews several innovative clinical or counseling intervention strategies used to enhance physical activity. Then, it addresses multiple novel settings in which exercise consultation occurs, with a special emphasis on contexts involving public–private partnerships. The chapter briefly addresses mHealth approaches that utilize various applications of technology. It provides a few recent examples of innovative interventions in workplace, school, and eldercare settings, with a special focus on partnership programs. It concludes with a brief discussion of several future directions in exercise consulting.
