Einleitung

This chapter first suggests that to move beyond Whiteness, there is a critical need to further research on issues of embodiment, pedagogy, and inequalities, re-centering and revealing the perspectives and body experiences of ethnically diverse girls and boys. Next, it examines how the intersectionality of gender/sex, race/ethnicity, and social class impacts the embodied identities of ethnically diverse young people, considering PE as a site of critical inquiry. Last, it advocates for constructing PE as a socio-cultural, critical, and transformative pedagogical site for supporting ethnically diverse young people's issues of embodiment and for advancing social change. From a critical perspective, embodiment refers to the process through which, consciously and/or unconsciously, young people form their identity through their negotiation of the intersectionality of gender/sex, race/ethnicity, social class, and (dis)ability. Embodied identity thus manifests itself through a wide range of cultural practices and expressions of the body. (gekürzt)
