Abstract des Autors

Adequate nutrition and the instilment of appropriate habits with regard to food selection and timing are of particular importance when building the foundation for a healthy lifestyle as well as a competitive athletic experience during childhood and adolescence. Nutrition can be used to enhance performance and will be the specific emphasis of this chapter. Specific areas of focus when considering the nutritional needs of young athletes are the maintenance of proper growth and development, the prevention and management of injuries as well as overreaching or overtraining, and the regulation of energy balance and availability. This chapter will examine nutritional strategies from the approach of three individual, but overlapping, sets of domains, including the Long-Term Nutritional Development (LTND) model, the Daily Nutrition model and a more applied approach using nutrient timing.
