This chapter examines the role of sport in the construction and articulation of varying forms of Irish ethnic identity among the diaspora. The chapter begins by positioning the role of sport in this regard within the wider context of Irish emigration. This discussion provides a broad sweep of sports and their import in a range of diasporic contexts. Thereafter, the chapter focuses on the development of the Gaelic games in the USA and, more specifically, their role in enabling sections of the Irish emigre to construct and articulate their ethnicity.
