Abstract des Autors
The concept of athletes as main actors of the Olympic Games goes along with a central expectation from the athlete; namely, that he or she accepts the responsibility to serve as a role model. This embraces not only the display of athletic excellence but also the incorporation of values, which could underline the educational impact of sport on society. This vision is not new as it was already a central idea in the thinking of Pierre de Coubertin. This will be explained within the article and will demonstrate how Coubertin's vision of the athlete as an Olympic role model has been challenged and adjusted to the world of sport in the 21st Century.
