Abstract des Autors

The objective is to design conditionally-activated, load-limiting binding plates for reducing ACL injuries in Alpine skiing without increasing the likelihood of inadvertent release. Reducing ACL injuries is important to the future of skiing and ski racing. The occurrence of Grade III ACL injuries in Alpine skiing has increased over the past four decades, from less than 5% in the early 1970s to over 20% in 2001. Grade III ACL injuries are the most common, serious ski injury (Shealy et al., 2003). Principles of axiomatic design (Suh 1990) are employed here to analyze the proposed binding plate concept. Axiomatic design is an engineering tool that purpots to develop the best possible physical design solutions for a set of functions. Solutions are structured using functional-physical, bimodal thinking such that design parameters (DPs), or physical elements, fulfill functional requirements (FRs), elements of the functional domain, that satisfy customer needs.
