The author has presented a detailed characteristic of modern biathlon. He has analyzed the essence of the sport itself as a combination of two sports, the separate competitive distances, the profile of the competitive traces, the qualities and skills needed for the sport, the structure of the complex preparation of the competitors, the rules, the technical equipment of the competition and other sides of the sport.
