A historiographical analysis of the formation and development of Ural State University of Physical Culture was carried out. The paper contains information about famous persons standing at the origins of the university, structural changes and transformations that have occurred in the period from 1970 up to the present day, as well as data on the improvement of human resources, methodological and material support of the educational process. Much attention is paid to the analysis of the contribution of the university to the development of sports industry in the Urals and training of marquee athletes. Among the graduates of Ural State University of Physical Culture – Olympic champion Sergey Makarov, Sergey Starikov, Svetlana lshmuratova, Valery Gopin, Olympic champions Sergey Babinov, Sergey Myl'nikov, Evgeny Davydov, Stanislav Kulinichenko, Svetlana Bazhanova, Mansur lsaev, Semen Yelistratov and others. The world famous graduates of Ural State University of Physical Culture are judoka Gregory Verichev, volleyball player Yekaterina Gamova, boxer Sergey Kovalev, coach of the Russian national ice hockey team Oleg Znarok. The current state and trends of further development of Ural State University of Physical Culture is also characterized, which is determined by the creation on the basis of the university of the system of continuing education for staff of the sphere of physical culture and sport. Today Ural State University of Physical Culture is a major scientific and educational center of sports and physical culture and educational work in the Ural Federal District and nearby areas. More than 70% of its employees have scientific degrees and sports titles. More than 15% are doctors of science, professors. Among the important directions of research of the university it is necessary to highlight scientific and methodological support of athletes specializing in track and field athletics, ice hockey, judo, speed skating, boxing, water polo, rowing and canoeing. Проводится историографический анализ становления и развития Уральского государственного университета физической культуры. Сообщаются сведения об известных личностях, стоящих у истоков создания вуза, о структурных изменениях и преобразованиях, произошедших в период с 1970 г. по настоящее время, о совершенствовании кадрового, методического и материально-технического обеспечения образовательного процесса. Большое внимание уделено анализу вклада университета в развитие спортивной отрасли Урала и подготовку выдающихся спортсменов. Среди выпускников УралГУФК - двукратные олимпийские чемпионы Сергей Макаров, Сергей Стариков, Светлана Ишмуратова, Валерий Гопин, олимпийские чемпионы Сергей Баринов, Сергей Мыльников, Евгений Давыдов, Станислав Кулиниченко, Светлана Бажанова, Мансур Исаев, Семен Елистратов и другие. Всемирную славу среди выпускников УралГУФК обрели дзюдоист Григорий Веричев, волейболистка Екатерина Гамова, боксер Сергей Ковалев, тренер сборной России по хоккею Oлег Знарок. Характеризуются также современное состояние и тенденции дальнейшего развития Уральского государственного университета физической культуры, что определяется созданием на базе вуза системы непрерывного образования кадров для отрасли физической культуры и спорта. Сегодня УралГУФК - это крупный научно-образовательный центр спортивной и физкультурно-образовательной работы в Уральском федеральном округе и близлежащих регионах. Более 70 % его сотрудников имеют ученые степени и спортивные звания. Свыше 15 % - доктора наук, профессора. Среди актуальных направлений научной деятельности вуза необходимо выделить научно-методическоe сопровождение спортсменов, специализирующихся в легкой атлетикe, хоккее с шайбой, дзюдо, конькобежном спорте, боксе, водном поло, гребле на байдарках и каноэ. Работа с ними ведется на основе данных спортивной генетики, анализа производительности в спорте, технологий оперативного контроля физической деятельности с использованием системы Firstbeat.
